Generate Content from Query into Excel File

Queries can be generated into defined excel spreadsheets. This way, you can use files which already have content. Detail and hierarchical queries can also be used as source documents, however, when this is the case only elements on the uppermost level are considered.

Prepare Excel File

Prepare an excel file by naming its spreadsheets.

  • Drag & drop an excel file into a objectiF RPM directory.
  • Change the file’s stereotype to GeneratedExcelFile.

Configure Excel Generation

Next, configure the generation process by specifying in which spreadsheet and starting from what row the content should be generated.

  1. In a file’s context menu, execute the command Configure Excel Generation.
  2. In the section for Context Element, select a query or hierarchical query as the source of content. If you select a hierarchical query as the context element, only elements from the uppermost level will be generated into the excel document.
  3. In this drop-down menu for Target-Worksheet, select a worksheet (spreadsheet). When generated into the excel document, it will have the same name as displayed here.
  4. Enter here the row from the worksheet. Data generated into the document will begin from this row.

By default, the options for Create Headings and Open After Generation are already selected.

  1. Deselect these options if you don’t want the query’s column headings to be generated and/ or the excel file shouldn’t be opened upon generation. Leaving the option for Create Headings still selected will result in the query headings also being generated into the document, as specified in Target-Row.
  2. Click on OK to save your choices.

Generate Content

Once you have made the necessary changes to the configurations, you can generate the excel file. Upon generation, the file is firstly checked out of the system and subsequently checked back in. During this period, users can edit the file.

If the name of a specified spreadsheet changes after configurations have already been made, the contents of the query are then generated into a new spreadsheet. This new spreadsheet’s name is specified during the configuration. Note that the filter set in the query will not be observed during the generation process.

  • Select the excel file for which the configuration will be carried out.
  • In the context menu of the file, select either Generate Content and Open or simply Generate Content.
